World Book Day
We had a fantastic time celebrating World Book Day on Thursday 7th March.
We had our own theme this year: ‘Bringing the Classics to Life.’
Classic books could be defined as those noteworthy books that have been well-loved for many generations- think The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe or Black Beauty.
The classics can also be quite challenging to read so we wanted to share them with the children and bring them to life to show them why they are such popular books and to make them feel more confident about reading them.
At the juniors, our day started with an assembly where we read an extract from Mary Poppins before watching a clip from the film adaptation. The children were captivated by Mary and Bert’s ‘day out’ to the countryside!
After that, every class took part in ‘Page to Stage.’ Each year group were allocated an extract from a classic text, which they had to to bring alive either through drama, role play or by simply performing their fluent reading.
- Year R performed ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’
- Year 1 performed ‘Skrimbleshanks’ from Cats
- Year 2 performed ‘Paddington Bear’
- Year 3 performed ‘The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe’
- Year 4 performed ‘101 Dalmatians’
- Year 5 performed ‘The Wizard of Oz’
- Year 6 performed ‘Oliver Twist’
As well as this, we also did the Masked Reader, where some mystery teachers read a verse from ‘The Owl and the Pussy Cat’. The teachers weren’t revealed until the end of day, which kept everyone guessing and was a lot of fun!
Huge shout out to Mrs Muller, Coach Jordan, Miss Irving, Miss Bartlett, Miss King and Miss Cameron who all did a brilliant job of being our mystery readers!
Classic or heritage texts are an important part of a healthy reading diet and are recommended for challenging children’s reading and fluency skills.
If you are interested in supporting your children with this, please see the recommended book list on our website.
